Letaba Thatchers is headed up by Mr Andre Friis. Starting out in 1970, Andre was one of the pioneers who developed and mastered the art of successful thatching. In those early days, thatching was mostly used in game lodges. The Kruger National Park made extensive use of thatching and many of the camps and lodges were completed by Letaba Thatchers. The industry developed and in 1984, the Master Thatchers Association of S.A. was formed with Andre in conjunction with other founding members, consisting of six of the major thatching contractors at the time. Andre was chairman of this association from 1984-1999.
The objective of the Association is to improve the image of thatching whilst protecting the consumer against poor workmanship and misrepresentation. The Association has formed a quality committee which has set standards for all members. The articles hereof clearly compel a member to adhere to the quality standards or pay the penalty of total rectification to any sub-standard workmanship. The founder members of the Association have been instrumental in pioneering fire retardation in thatching, offering the public an alternative against misrepresentation as in the past. The Association was formed principally to protect both the consumer and the image of professional thatchers. Membership qualification is and will in future be based on an applicant's experience, integrity and quality of workmanship. Letaba Thatchers is also a member of the South African Thatchers Association (SATA), which was formed in 1997. Andre is also on the technical committee of this association. Their objective is to develop and maintain quality standards for the trade and to expand the industry to the benefit of the contractors, the consumer and other parties involved.
